A SUMMONING OF STONES
New York: Macmillan, 1954. First printing. Hardcover. Cloth-backed boards; 8vp. 64 pp. Briefly inscribed by the poet (to a small press publisher/printer) on the half-title, and signed in full. The poet's first book, a collection of poems in traditional form, by a poet who would go on to win most of the major prizes over a distinguished career. His beautiful use of language and facility in form belied his subject matter which often dealt with the horrifying age in which he lived. He died in 2004. A very good copy the yellow board and gray cloth worn along one bottom edge, top tips bumped, interior very fresh. The price-clipped dust jacket not quite very good with small loss at the edges. Still an uncommon and important first book. Very good + / very good -. Item #15414
