An uncorrected proof copy in plain, pale blue wrappers of these stories which except for 13 (of 68) have never been reprinted. As recounted by his close friend John Updike (in MORE MATTER), with "fearsome" agent Andrew Wylie and the powerful lawyer Martin Garbus, the Cheever family were able after considerable expense on both sides to cancel the contract Cheever's wife Mary had signed with this "mom-and-pop" Chicago publisher to publish stories not included in his Pulitzer Prize-winning COLLECTED STORIES. Cheever published his first story in 1930, he chose no story before 1946 for that collection, leaving a great number for the UNCOLLECTED. (Cheever chose only 61 for the Knopf edition, leaving 68 which the small Academy Chicago planned to publish.) Edited by Franklin H. Dennis; an introduction by Scott Donaldson. Back covers stained (splattered with what looks like gilded paint), otherwise about fine and seemingly unused copy. Quite scarce.
