Illustrated wrappers; 4to. A handsomely produced magazine for children aged 5-8, which lasted for somewhat over 20 years, and had some distinguished contributors. This issue with possibly Richard P. Wilbur's first contribution in a magazine at age 8. The poet (in 2013) has signed at his contribution the poem "Puppy" on page 50. In a 1977 Paris Review interview he is quoted: "I began writing poetry as a small child, and became a hired poet at the age of eight when my first poem was published in John Martin's Magazine. As I remember it, it was a horrible little poem about nightingales, which I never could have seen or heard as an American child." It is possible that "Puppy" is a second contribution, though as likely that the poet misremembers. At any rate a scarce magazine and certainly rare signed. Not listed in Field's bibliography. The spine worn, a portion neatly folded, but about very good and the contents quite clean. A truly delightful piece of juvenilia by one of the great poets of the 20th C, and likely the poet's first publication.
