The first book by a poet who until his 2001 selected poems Early and Late (which won "The New Criterion prize") has been hesitant to publish his work, preferring to continue to perfect them. Professor emeritus of SUNY Oneonta, and 1952 graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop, his poems have been passed along to friends through his self-created "chapbooks". He has always written in strict form. Despite this one collection he is listed in The Oxford Companion to Twentieth Century Poetry; Lewis Turco's entry states: "The later poems are as well-written and as worthy of publication as any of those to be found in his first book." A well read copy, internally fine.
